Blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies are becoming major disruptors in financial markets, challenging the established order while opening new opportunities. An area that is only beginning to be explored is smart contracts, in which the blockchain acts as a mediator between multiple parties to a contract.

Several smart contract platforms have emerged in the past year, of which Ethereum has the greatest momentum. This one-day workshop will jump start software engineers to program in Ethereum. Using material developed over the past year, the workshop will be split into morning and afternoon sessions:

Objectives:

  • Grasp of basic concepts

  • Gain hands-on experience of the development environment (and its traps and pitfalls)

Morning Session: Basic grasp of Smart Contract concepts

  • Blockchains

  • Secure hash functions

  • ERC20 Tokens

  •

Afternoon: Get up and Running with Ethereum tools

  • Download the development toolset

  • Configure the development environment

  • Develop a smart contract

Participants should be familiar with structured programming languages such as C++ and Python. They should bring their own laptop, running linux or ios (Ethereum support for Windows is very weak, so Windows users should install a linux shell before coming).

About Lecturer

The workshop will be facilitated by Chris Maden, CEO of Computer Project Management Consultants Ltd. Chris picked up his first computer at the age of 13, learnt how to program it and has never looked back. He has helped central banks in Asia and the Middle East implement security for payments systems that clear US$ tens of billions every day.
